Karen is a very spirited person who believes that all beings everywhere have a divine birthright to live in freedom, happiness and peace. She also recognizes that all creatures have unique gifts or “divine offerings” and her style of teaching yoga tries to discover, explore and nurture those gifts once they are revealed. In her classes and her own personal practice she brings focus to the body’s energy centers (chakras) and to proper alignment of the spine to ensure that each asana (posture) is a safe, grounded and dynamic expression of spirit.
She believes her spiritual voyage in this incarnation began at age four after her parents moved to Encinitas, CA. Her father has been one of her greatest gurus having been a guiding force since the beginning of his own spiritual study and meditation practice of almost thirty years with Self-Realization Fellowship. SRF is a lineage devoted to unifying the philosophies of east (Hinduism) and west (Christianity) and its mission is to create a direct relationship with the divine through meditation, affirmation, prayer and chanting. She is grateful that her father has taken her along on his spiritual journey and that he has inspired her to pursue her own spiritual goals here on the west coast of California.
Due to the cross country relocation, she has had the opportunity and experience of living on both coasts of America all her life. Most of her family and many of her dear friends are on the east coast in Pennsylvania where she received her B.A. in the Arts (theater and music) at Temple University in Philadelphia. While attending college there, she was introduced to Jivamukti Yoga by her former teacher Marni Sclaroff. Sometime after studying under Marni, with her guidance and support, she received her certification through Dhyana Yoga of Philadelphia where she claims to have found her true love for Jivamukti Yoga almost six years ago. Although she is not certified directly through Jivamukti, she has received extensive training in that lineage and it organically infuses her teaching. Her other influences include Kundalini (3HO), Ashtanga and Anusara Yoga.
Although yoga and music are her greatest passions in life, she feels that she must offer everything up to the universe in honor of her guru, Paramahansa Yogananda. She feels all the gurus of SRF have guided her on her journey and they are her protectors. She shares a deep inexplicable love and respect for all of the gurus of Self-Realization Fellowship and all other saints and sages of all religions who share the same dream of universal peace and love. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti
